Walter Cronkite

Gosh, I am so late with this, but wanted to share the one time I got to meet this great man.

Jon and I were at the CBS 75th Anniversary party in NY, 2003. Everyone who'd been on CBS was there -- well, all the adults; naturally they ignored the kid stars except for three: Jon, Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli -- but that's another story. I've been in rooms with wall-to-wall stars before and it can be overwhelming; you don't know which way to turn. You have to focus in on whom you'd really like to meet and go for it. I saw Walter Cronkite seated along the edge of the noisy, crowded room and made a bee line for him. I stood in front of him and he looked up. I leaned over and began speaking in his ear: "Oh, Mr. Cronkite, you've given me the news my whole life long...JFK... blah, blah, blah..." He looked at me and said, "My dear...I can't hear a word you're saying." We laughed and I was relieved he had not heard my babble. I raised my hand and tenderly cupped his cheek, trying to convey all my thoughts and emotions through my eyes. He raised his eyebrows and smiled. I let my hand linger a moment, then nodded my thanks and took my leave.

That was it, my moment with the most trusted man in America.
I will always remember it.

My Big 15

Books stick with you for all sorts of reasons, certainly not all because they were great literature. Boy, what it reveals about a person...well, me, specifically. So, in no particular order, here are 15 books that have stuck with me thru the years:

Great Expectations
World According to Garp
A Prayer for Owen Meany
The Agony and the Ecstacy
The Painted Bird
The Prophet
Marlene Dietrich by Maria Riva
Swanson on Swanson
In Cold Blood
Hollywood Babylon
The Once and Future King
Ragtime
Love Story
Candy
Will There Really Be A Morning? Frances Farmer autobio
every play by Tennessee Williams I could find

What are yours?
